Tasmania - Parliament and MPs
Tasmania has two Houses of Parliament, the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council.
For the Legislative Assembly, Tasmania is divided into five electorates which each elect five Members (total 25 Members) using the Hare-Clark system of proportional representation. (Click here for a description of the Hare-Clark system.)
Thus each voter has five representatives in the Legislative Assembly. Elections are held every four years.
For the Legislative Council, the State is divided into fifteen single-Member constituencies. Members are elected for six years, and periodical elections are held for either two or three electorates every year.
The Legislative Council is never dissolved as there are no 'general' elections for the full Legislative Council. Each voter has one representative in the Legislative Council.
The Labor Party is in government.
The Premier is David Bartlett.
The Leader of the Opposition is Will Hodgman (Liberal).
