The Victorian Law Reform Commission is conducting an Inquiry into the decriminalisation of abortion in Victoria...
The VLRC asked for submissions from the public. They are preparing the Report and have to report to the Victorian parliament with their recommendations by 28 March 2008 - the Attorney-General then has 14 sitting days of Parliament to release the Report.
The government is then expected to propose legislation to 'decriminalise' abortion.
The VLRC Inquiry: Submissions were asked for! Submissions were due by 9 November 2007. Click here for the VLRC Inquiry page. Click here for the Information Paper.
Terms of Reference The terms of Reference for the VLRC Inquiry were VERY NARROW. The government asked the VLRC for "legislative advice on the decriminalisation of terminations of pregnancy" - in other words, to advise how the current situation regarding abortions being 'allowed' can be incorporated into law and to remove the 'criminal' nature of abortion. We asked readers to ask the VLRC to request wider terms of reference from the government and to ask MPs and political leaders to widen this Inquiry to include coercion, informed consent etc. etc. A proposed list of additional terms of reference has been prepared by Charles Francis QC - who has successfully acted on behalf of a number of women who have sued abortionists.
