Bad language from the PM

Reports in the media about Prime Minister Kevin Rudd using foul language in a meeting with Labor backbenchers have raised the issue of whether such language is appropriate from a Prime Minister.

The report that broke the news referred to Mr Rudd as 'church-going' - raising the question of whether this is appropriate behaviour for a professed Christian.

Bill Muehlenberg noted that we can all make 'mistakes' but pointed out that Mr Rudd, when questioned about his repeated use of the 'f-word', refused to apologise for it.

These are significant questions - should we expect more from our PM? Should he be a better role model for our children?
Should he apologise for the bad language?

We believe the answer to all of them is 'yes'.

The email we sent out in this follows... with links to media reports.

Why not let Mr Rudd know you're concerned about his behaviour - and discuss it on the young adults' forum on our Resistance Thinking website.

E-News: Swearing from PM Kevin Rudd - is it appropriate?

We are deeply concerned about recent media reports of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd using explicit foul language (the f word) in discussions with several Labor Party backbenchers, including three women.

The first report was by Glen Milne in The Daily Telegraph(see links to reports in attached document) who noted his previous 'temper tantrums' (eg RAAF hostess) - of course he noted that Mr Rudd is "church-going".

Mr Rudd refused to apologise. In fact he said to the media ''I think it's fair to say that in the consistent tradition of the Australian Labor Party we're given to robust conversation. . . I make no apology for either the content of my conversation or the robustness with which I expressed my views.'' [emphasis added]

Example of the Prime Minister
This issue leads to the question - 'What sort of behaviour and example we should expect from the Prime Minister of Australia?'.

We should expect our leaders to be responsible in their speech and actions and consistent in their behaviour.
That means in private as well as in public.

This is a terrible example to our young people - if they see or hear the PM swearing like this our young people and children will think it is OK - and it is not!

John Morrissey, of the Australian Family Association, told the media the speech was "quite reprehensible".
Opinion writer Suzie O'Brien wrote that "the PM has bullying tendencies and needs counselling."

One TV news report said that it seems we have one image of a polite and restrained Prime Minister in the public arena and quite another image in private.

Not the first time
This isn't the first time Mr Rudd has been accused of swearing and using the 'f-word'.
Last year Dr Peter van Onselen wrote a book which mentioned that Mr Rudd regularly swore at staff.  This was reported in the Daily Telegraph. The swearing Kevin Rudd voters won't see - Daily Telegraph, July 13, 2008.

Not the only one
Mr Rudd, it seems, isn't the only one in the ALP to use coarse language. Julia Gillard defended Rudd, saying "I think as adults in the Labor Party from time to time we might say the occasional robust word. I'm known to do that as much as anybody else."

Appropriate behaviour for a Christian?
It is one thing to think about this matter as it applies to our political leaders.
However, since Mr Rudd promotes himself as being a Christian and having Christian values - we should ask if this is appropriate behaviour for Christians...

Our response? We don't think it is appropriate behaviour for Christians - or our Prime Minister!

Action - Write to Kevin Rudd .... Have your say!

Write to Kevin Rudd and point out that his explicit language is totally inappropriate and is a very poor example to our young people and children. Ask him to apologise for it.
