'Progressive' Christianity

Have you seen these two words used together - 'progressive' and 'Christianity'?

Is it a valid expression? Or is it an oxymoron? What does it mean?

After seeing an increasing use of the term 'progressive', along with seeing numerous groups starting up using the word 'Progressive' we wrote an article for the journal.

Progressive Christian?
Jenny Stokes, Salt Shakers journal, May 2007.

We came to the conclusion that using the word 'progressive' meant that people were distancing themselves from orthodox, reformed Christianity. It is is not unusual to find them disputing various Christian doctrines such as 'Jesus being the only way of salvation' or the virgin birth or the resurrection of Christ.

Peter Jones has written an excellent analysis of the use of the word progressive and concludes it is just another form of 'liberalism'.

The issue goes even further ... Patrick Sookhdeo recently said that what used to be called 'liberal' is now often what is called 'evangelical', which is creating huge problems for Christian witness. [We have the CD of Patrick's message for sale in our office.]

Peter Jones' article:

New "Progressive Christianity": An Old Liberal Swindle
Peter Jones (CWiPP - Truth Xchange) writes about the use of the word 'progressive' which is usually associated with decrying the 'fundamentalists'. Excellent analysis of an important issue in the 'church' today.
