Global warming - The Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change
According to their own website, the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC) "has been established by the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) to assess scientific, technical and
socio-economic information relevant for the understanding of climate change, its
potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation."
The IPCC was set up by the United Nations (UN) in 1988. The United Nations
then held the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June
1992, with around 25,000 people and 108 nations attending! The UN had earlier
set up the UNEP in 1972.
The IPCC has published three Assessment Reports: the First
in 1990, the Second in 1995 and the Third in 2001. Click here for all these reports plus
other IPCC Special Reports.
The IPCC is currently completing the Fourth Assessment
Report. The Summary for policy makers was published in early
2007 and Working groups then completed the Report. Progress reports
are published on
the IPCC website. Click here to
read the actual "Summary for Policymakers".
The full IPCC Fourth Assessment Report was
published in late 2007. Click here for actual Report.
