16 June 2009 - Honouring fathers
Amidst the negative things happening, we need to remember the good things and the positive things that are happening.
In the USA (and many countries around the world), Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. This year it is on June 21, 2009.
In Australia we celebrate Father's Day on the first Sunday in September.
[History - click here ]
Of course we need to value fathers all year round!
This article by Rebecca Hagelin, the Vice-President of The Heritage Foundation, has been published for Fathers' Day.
Honoring Fatherhood
By Rebecca Hagelin, June 9, 2009.
In her article she says "Yet, "dad" seems to be the only person in modern society who it is acceptable to belittle. To what extent does such treatment pervert our son's developing attitudes about the men they are expected to become? And why would we teach our daughters that there's no real hope or need to marry a strong, reliable man of character? ..."

11 June 2009 - What next?
Polygamists claim discrimination and demand marriage with multiple partners:

Next frontier? Polygamists demand multi-sex marriage
WND, June 5, 2009.
"A polygamy advocacy organization Pro-Polygamy says the New Hampshire law that is intended to assure "equal access to marriage" for all instead specifically embeds in state statutes bigotry against polygamists...."

With New Hampshire legalising same-sex 'marriage' there are now six states in the USA that have taken that step...
Governor John Lynch signed the bill though he had previously said he did not support same sex marriages. He insisted on some changes but commented on arguments made for 'equality'.

10 June 2009 - Dr Tracye Hansen - homosexual parenting
Psychologist Dr Trayce Hansen has examined the studies of same-sex parenting and investigated whether children raised by homosexuals are more likely to be homosexual.
She found that researchers don't give these finding in their 'summaries' and that such children are 4-10 times more likely to be homosexual themselves.
Click here for more details on our 'same-sex parenting' page - it has full links to her review.
Alternatively click here for Dr Hansen's Review and here for the WND article.

9 June 2009 - Senator Fielding and climate change
Senator Steve Fielding has been investigating 'climate change' - he went to the USA last week and attended the Heartland Institute's International Conference in Washington - of scientists and others who dispute the notion of global warming. Click here for conference details.
He also spoke to the White House advisor on climate change - he has also spoken to 'sceptic' scientist Ian Plimer.

Senator Fielding wrote a feature article in The Australian yesterday explaining his trip, his thoughts on the sun causing warming, and his discussions with scientists.
He asks "Why didn't anyone tell me?"
It looks as though he is not inclined to support and vote for the government's Emissions Trading Scheme- which is good news!
The article:
I kept an open mind on the road to Washington
Senator Steve Fielding | June 08, 2009 - The Australian.

This commentary appeared in American Thinker...
Heartland Conference has Aussie Senator Questioning Climate Hype
Marc Sheppard, June 08, 2009 American Thinker
"An Australian Senator, whose vote will be crucial to passing his country’s proposed emissions trading legislation, has expressed serious doubts concerning manmade global warming after attending last week’s Heartland climate conference. And he’s alarming climate alarmists with talk that such legislation, “which would cost thousands of Australians their jobs,” may be totally unnecessary....."

3 June 2009 - Abortion and overseas aid
Senator Ron Boswell has called for accountability over the overseas aid funding being used for abortion. Here are extracts from his media release:
CONCERN OVER ACCOUNTABILITY FOR AUSAID ABORTION FUNDING

“Australia needs to know how much money goes to which overseas countries for abortion related services under new AUSAID guidelines,” said The Nationals’ Senator Ron Boswell today.
“At Senate Estimates today I was told by officials that these funds would be allocated in block grants to non-government organisations working in several countries and that it would be impossible to know exactly what money was spent in which country for abortion services.”

“Under soon to be finalised new guidelines, Australia will for the first time in its history fund overseas counselling and training for abortions and even the abortions themselves. Abortion is a serious and sensitive issue and I believe it is essential that Australians know exactly what money is spent where and for what abortions and related activities including promotion of abortion.”

We support Senator Boswell's call for accountability - especially since the lobby groups that called for this funding (Australian Reproductive Health Alliance and Planned Parenthood) actively perform abortions.

2 June 2009 - 'Hate Crimes' and homophobia
The good news has finished!
In today's Age newspaper, Rob Hulls announces that he is planning to introduce hate crime laws that will give tougher penalties if a crime is committed against a protected minority group - the proposed categories are race, religion, gender and sexual orientation! [This is seen as a response against attacks on Indian students...]
This is a retrograde step - we need to treat ALL people equally - not favour some classes!
Article - Hulls plans hate crime crackdown, The Age , June 1, 2009.

Homophobia - the Victorian Education Department has introduced a policy to combat 'homophobia' - it proposes putting up posters to support homosexual students and having books in counselling rooms.

Of particular concern is the threat against teachers that if they do not act against any perceived 'homophobia' then they could be brought to the Equal Opportunity Commission to explain their actions!

1 June 2009 - More good news - Monash Gender Clinic and Director
Yesterday's Age newspaper carried a very good article exposing the Gender Dysphoria (sex-change) Clinic at Melbourne's Monash Medical Centre and its temporary closure.
This is something we have been concerned about, and 'quietly' working towards, for some time.

A feature front page article noted that the Monash Gender Dysphoria Clinic is currently closed for three months to review procedures. Two reports, one by the Victorian government and another by an independent reviewer have assessed the clinic over the past few years and found it to be very flawed. Many of the recommendations for improvement have not been implemented.
The article said that the Director, Trudy Kennedy, had been forced to quit!
Media Reports:

28 May 2009 - What will 'Carbon Taxes' COST YOU?
The
federal government's Emissions Trading Scheme and 'Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme' will impose huge taxes on every Australian family.
Professor Bob Carter has estimated the cost would be $3,054 per family per year (at a rate of $30/t of carbon dioxide).

The indirect costs would more than double that cost!

26 May 2009 - Greens propose euthanasia law in Tasmania
Tasmanian
Greens Leader Nick McKim has tabled a Private Members' Bill called Dying With Dignity Bill 2009.
The Bill "seeks to confirm the right of those suffering from a terminal illness and experiencing intolerable pain to request assistance from a medically qualified person to end voluntarily their lives in a humane and dignified manner."

ACTION:
We encourage all Tasmanians to contact their MPs and ask them to oppose the legalisation of euthanasia as proposed by the Greens.

25 May 2009 - George Pell criticises 'climate catastrophe' bandwagon
At least ONE church leader is opposing the 'climate change/global warming' juggernaut.
In a new article Cardinal George Pell highlights several factors: that the government is becoming more cautious, the impact of Ian Plimer's book on global warming and various statistics about temperature and climate.

22 May 2009 - Legalising prostitution
The NSW government legalised prostitution - but illegal brothels have flourished.
Eighteen months ago the government introduced legislation to make it easier for local councils to close down illegal brothels.
However a report in the Daily Telegraph reveals that illegal brothels are 'exploding' all across Sydney - the report claims that "'tough' new laws have failed to prevent unprotected sex, slavery and corruption."

It is estimated that ILLEGAL brothels and escort services outnumber legal ones by a ratio of FOUR to ONE!

This is no surprise. Legalise brothels and people think prostitution is OK. The police think that brothels are normal and don't investigate 'illegal' ones - they say 'how do they know which are which?'
After the legalisation of prostitution in Victoria, with a previous estimated 50 illegal brothels - it went to 100 legal, around 1500 single sex workers and an estimated 400 illegal brothels!

An irony - who is the group complaining about the illegal brothels? The Adult Business Association - they represent the owners of LEGAL services - they don't like the competition!

21 May 2009 - Diversity Week - Your tax dollars at work!
The University of Queensland is holding Diversity Week next week - 25-29 May.
They want everyone to "walk in others' shoes" - whether that is race, religion, culture of sexuality/gender.
Staff and students are invited to apply for grants to put on activities and events...

And the highlight of the week is said to the the Vice-Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Awards - with prizes of $10,000 and $5,000.

With Phillip Adams facilitating a panel and Carmen Lawrence (former WA Premier and federal Health Minister) speaking, it is sure to highlight a wide range of 'diversity'. Click here for Events list.
Is this what our tax dollars (or university dollars for that matter) should be used for?

21 May 2009 - UK freedom of speech clause at risk
Last year the UK government passed a law to make “inciting hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation” an offence. The clause was included in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 (Section 74, page 66).

Lord Waddington successfully inserted a free speech clause into that Act to ensure that criticism of homosexuality would not be considered as an ‘offence’ under the Act. ( Act - Schedule 16, No 4, P 237)
NOW he UK government is moving to REPEAL the free speech clause!
Christian Concern for our Nation has prepared a detailed Information and Action Pack on this proposal by the UK government.

Moral of the story - you can't rely on exemptions - they can always be REMOVED!

20 May 2009 - Dinosaur soft tissue and protein found
Have you heard that scientists have found soft tissue and protein in dinosaur skeletons?
If these creatures really did die out 80 million (or 60 million or whatever they claim) would they really still have soft tissue in their skeletons?
The answer? NO!

Creation Ministries report on the latest discovery...
"Mary Schweitzer announces even stronger evidence for amazingly preserved flexible blood vessel and cell structures from dinosaurs. This time they are from the bones of a plant-eating dinosaur (hadrosaur / duck-billed dino) rather than a T. rex. And this time she performed the tests the critics demanded to prove this beyond reasonable doubt. Objective chemical measurements show that proteins should not last anywhere near the claimed 80 million years even if frozen. So this discovery should by rights be the end of the billions-of-years paradigm."
See the CMI article Dinosaur soft tissue and protein—even more confirmation!

20 May 2009 - Did you miss IDAHO Day?
You might have missed IDAHO Day but homosexual lobby groups and communities around the world did their best to let everyone know...

So what is IDAHO, you ask...
It stands for the 'International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia' or IDAHO for short. This year they added 'transphobia' and highlighted that particular issue.
They claim that 300 organisations in 75 countries signed their petition to 'reject transphobia and respect gender identity'.
Click here for the IDAHO website.

Yes, we're often accused of 'homophobia'. We ask 'What does that mean by that?' and invariably the response is 'You hate homosexuals'. We reject that accusation and we also refuse to own the term 'homophobia', however it is defined.

19 May 2009 - The government's legislation for the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme
On 4 May the Rudd government announced changes to their proposed carbon trading scheme. On 14 May they introduced the new legislation into the federal parliament.
In particular they extended the start date to 2011 (from 2010) - and changed the compensation rates to industry. They left the base limit at 5% reduction on 2000 carbon dioxide levels but increased the upper amount to 25% (from 15%) if other nations signed up to an agreement!

Now they are trying to get other parties in the Senate to support the scheme...

15 May 2009 - Review of exceptions in Victoria's Equal Opportunity Act

In MAY 2009 SARC released an OPTIONS PAPER.
They are asking for submissions by July 10, 2009.

11 May 2009 - Gender surgery and assessment
An article in today's Australian highlights the treatment of 'gender identity dysphoria'.
A woman who was treated by Monash Gender Dysphoria Clinic has alleged that the Director of the Clinic, Gertrude Kennedy, wrongly diagnosed her as a transsexual - this led to her having a double mastectomy and talking hormones. She later reverted to being a woman and is now the mother of three children. She is seeking to have Dr Kennedy censured by the Victoria's medical board. The Board has written to Dr Kennedy's lawyers, telling her they will conduct an informal hearing.

The article notes that the Clinic is closed for three months to assess its' operation since several reviews have found the Clinic is failing to operate adequately.

11 May 2009 - Obama's first 100 days - 'anti-life' agenda
Barack Obama has completed his first 100 days as President of the USA.
During that time he has implemented many 'anti-life' policies - from approving overseas aid funding for abortions and allowing federal funds to be used for embryonic stem cell research.
Fr. Alphonse de Valk, Editor, Catholic Insight has prepared a detailed assessment of Barack Obama's policies, decisions and appointments in his first 100 days as President.

8 May 2009 - Vic EO Act exceptions review - Options Paper
The Victorian Parliament's Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee has released an Options Paper on the exceptions in the Equal Opportunity Act.
The Committee is supposed to be looking at the exceptions to see if they fit with Victoria's 'Charter of Rights and Responsibilities'.
Regarding religious exceptions (Sections 75-77) the paper outlines possible options but generally favours a restriction of all the exceptions.
Submissions are being received and close 10 July 2009.
Click here for the Options Paper.

8 May 2009 - Abortion campaigns in Qld and NSW
Campaigns to decriminalise [legalise] abortion are underway in Queensland and NSW.
In Queensland, lobby group Children by Choice are running a campaign and have put out a media release calling for the government to decriminalise abortion.

In NSW the Greens are running a campaign to pressure the Labor government to introduce legislation to decriminalise abortion. NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says if the government doesn't act then the Greens will introduce a private member's bill.

7 May 2009 - 'Alex' given permission to remove breasts
When 'Alex' was 13 the Family Court gave approval for her to take hormones to stop puberty so she could become a boy (see link to court decision here ).

Now the girl is 17 - and the Family Court has approved her having her breasts removed to continue the process of gender change (decision not available yet).
As Andrew Bolt points out - this is a tragedy. Looking at the girl's family background one can see the situation that has led to this outcome.

6 May 2009 - Rudd government postpones carbon scheme
The Rudd
government has announced that it will delay the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme associated with the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme for one year, to 2011; reduce the cost of carbon (dioxide) to $10 a tonne for the first year (down from $25) and alter the emission targets. The minimum target remains at 5% reduction from 2000 levels by 2020 but the rate 'if the world agrees' rises from 15% to 25%.

In December last year, Mr Rudd said we could not wait to implement the scheme. Now it seems he has changed his mind.... perhaps to try and persuade the Senate to pass the legislation...

He blames the global financial crisis - however when he launched the scheme in December 2008, he noted there were already nations in recession but we could not wait to implement such a scheme.
The government should use the additional time to re-assess the scheme - the impact and the actual science...

20 April 2009 - Alcohol and religious freedom...
Connected topics?
Both were the subject of separate E-News emails today...

Alcohol -

Religious freedom -
Bob Carr, former NSW Labor Premier, has written a very good article, opposing the introduction of religious vilification laws or 'freedom of religion laws' and opposing the AHRC Inquiry into the 'Freedom of Religion and Belief.
We've posted it on our campaign page for the AHRC Inquiry - or click here for the article.

16 April 2009 - Illegal immigrants
In the past few months there has been an increase in the number of boats carrying illegal immigrants to Australia. People smugglers in Indonesia are carrying the people to Australia after they arrive in Indonesia.
The media is referring to these people as 'refugees' or 'asylum seekers' rather than 'illegal immigrants'.

This increase has been attributed to the change in government policy - from the tough line put in place by the Howard government that was effective in deterring people from coming to Australia illegally to the new policy implemented by the Rudd government that softened the detention provisions for the arrivals.

Now we have an explosion on one of these boats - it was being intercepted by navy officers and boats. There has been some discussion as to why the boat exploded, with WA Premier Colin Barnett referring to petrol being poured onto the decks. Former Howard government minister Phillip Ruddock, who was responsible for the 'Pacific Solution' said people smugglers often told people to scuttle their own boat to prevent being returned to Indonesia.

Undoubtedly an Inquiry will be be held - but it sounds a lot like the 'Children overboard' case!
In the meantime Australia needs to take action to protect its borders.

Media reports:
Asylum seekers arrive in Darwin after boat explosion

13 April 2009 - No drinking for teens under 18
Today
they said 'we got it wrong'!
Researchers in Melbourne have announced that there is NO safe level of drinking alcohol for teenagers. This counters the previous guidelines that said that there was a 'low-level risk' for drinking small amounts.
The outcome? Higher rates of alcohol abuse and risky sexual behaviour...

The research has been done by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne and published last week in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

No safe level of alcohol for teens
Canberra Times, 13/04/2009
"TEENAGERS who drink even small amounts of alcohol have a significantly higher risk of developing alcohol abuse or risky sexual behaviour as a young adult, research has found. ..."The team at the say their study, which tracked 1520 young people's drinking habits over more than 10 years from the mid-teens, shows no "safe" or "sensible" level of drinking for adolescents."

3 April 2009 - Same sex marriage in Sweden
Sweden
has passed legislation to allow same-sex marriage. Sweden allowed 'Registered Partnerships' in 1996 and added adoption rights for same-sex couples in 2002.

But that wasn't enough for the activists. The government eventually agreed, conceding that same-sex couples already had all the same rights as married couples.

The Bill was passed on 1 April 2009 - With only the Christian Democrats resisting the pressure, when it finally came to a vote the change received an overwhelming majority, despite 70 MPs apparently not being able to decide which way to go and thus not voting, the final vote was 261 in favour and 22 opposed. The new law will allow civil and religious ceremonies, but individual churches will be allowed to opt out of performing same-sex 'marriages'.

It just shows that giving registered relationships will NOT stop them asking for, and getting same-sex 'marriage'!

2 April 2009 - Climate change update
Sea Levels
One of
the claims of those promoting global warming is that sea levels will rise. Nils-Axel Mörner is the former chairman of the INQUA International Commission on Sea Level Change. March 2009

30 March 2009 - China, Mr Rudd and the Labor Party
China,
or the People's Republic of China– a communist nation - has tried to blend some parts of capitalism with their communism in recent years.
Now China is actually lending money to help in the current bail-outs!
How is that China has so much to invest around the world when many Chinese people live in such poor conditions – with low pay rates and high pollution?

Of particular concern is the news that China is investing heavily in Australian government bonds…

Kevin Rudd and China
It is concerning to hear that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd held meetings at the Lodge with Li Changchun, the head of propaganda, media and ideology for the Chinese Communist Party - and ranked five in China's nine-person ruling politburo standing committee - but the media and the public were not told.
The meeting was held in March 2009, just before Mr Rudd left for his current trip to the USA . The meeting was reported on Chinese media, but Australian media were apparently not told of the meeting.

PM Kevin Rudd keeps Lodge talks with Chinese secret | The Australian
The Australian, 26 Mar 2009

Following that, it has now been reported that Mr Rudd met China's security and intelligence chief, Zhou Yongkang in Canberra in November 2008 – but the Australian public was not told.

During his trip to the USA, Mr Rudd is reported as “urging Americans not to view China as the enemy”. In this interview he said "China represents a huge opportunity" and that China should be integrated into "global governance institutions". The interviewer, Jim Lehrer, referred to Kevin Rudd's previous role as a professional diplomat to China.
Mr Rudd has previously said he was inspired to become a diplomat and study Chinese by seeing Gough Whitlam’s "triumphal march to China" in 1973 (media report; Rudd speech).

Meanwhile the federal government’s Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon’s future is under a cloud because of his close association with Chinese businesswoman Helen Liu who has connections to the Chinese government. He received two trips to China from her whilst in Opposition but didn’t declare them on his register. She has also reportedly made sizeable donations to the Labor Party.

27 March 2009 - Socialism - and the financial crisis
The current financial crisis, with its bailouts and nationalisation of banks has led many to talk of the influence of Socialism.
David Noebel, leader of Summit Ministries, has written an insightful article called:
‘The Socialization of America - it addresses the current financial crisis and the history of socialism...
We hosted the week-long Worldview School with Summit Ministries in January 2008 and plan to hold another Summit in January 2010.
An interview with David speaking about the article is also available on Christian Worldview Network. Click here to listen to the interview.

David has monitored communism and socialism for many years, and edits the Schwartz Report on communism (originally started by the late Sydney doctor, Dr. Fred Schwarz).
In the article, David refers to events such as the start of the Fabian Socialists.
He writes “Today's financial events illustrate that America is not exempt from being led toward socialism. Predictions differ, depending on one's perspective, as to whether this will be a socialistic paradise or a socialistic hell. Time will tell. In the meantime, we'd do well to listen to warnings of the past….”

24 March 2009 - Queensland election result
The Labor government was returned in Queensland at the election held on Saturday 21 March 2009. The average two party preferred swing across all electorates (excluding the four retained by independents) was 4.15%.

Premier Anna Bligh is a member of Emily's List which promotes abortion. Prior to the election Labor said they had "no plans" to decriminalise abortion.
Of the six new ALP candidates endorsed by Emily’s List only one was elected. Of the seven sitting members endorsed by Emily’s List six retained their seats.
For a list of Emily's List candidates and members - click here.

The average swing against seats with Emily's List candidates was 5.25%.
Bonny Barry, a Labor MP who had proposed a private member’s bill to legalise abortion in the last parliament, lost her seat of Aspley with a swing of 7.5% against her. Prolife groups and churches had campaigned heavily against Ms Barry because of her promotion of legalised abortion.

24 March 2009 - Alcohol warnings and concerns
Concern about binge drinking continues to be highlighted in the media. The alcopops tax was defeated in the Senate - in many respects this was a 'bandaid' approach - young people swapped to mixing their own drinks.

On the issue of alcohol, there has been a call for the banning of alcohol sales in Halls Creek in WA. Reports say that about 1 in 4 babies are born with fetal alcohol syndrome. Teenagers who have fetal alcohol syndrome are now having babies who also have the syndrome, including brain damage.

Recently the National Health and Medical Research Council revised its alcohol guidelines - reducing the limit to two standard drinks a day for both men and women. They also recommended "no alcohol at all for children, people under 18, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers."

17 March 2009 - 'The Imam's Daughter' speaks about abuse - UK
An amazing article was printed in The Times in the UK this week.
The article tells the story of 'The Imam's Daughter' by speaking with the author of a new book written by a girl who was a Muslim and converted to Christianity. The book was released on 5 March 2009.
The book - and the article - highlight how she lived in the UK , was raped by her father who was an imam, how she faced a forced marriage at 16 and fled her family, and then became a Christian. She then feared for her life when they tried to kill her.

The author, "Hannah", is now married... She wants to highlight the plight of Muslim women in Britain.
The book: The Imam's Daughter, by "Hannah Shah".
Click here for details of the book on Amazon.
The article:
My imam father came after me with an axe
Times Online | 15 March 2009 - Dominic Lawson
"We are all too familiar with the persecution of Christians in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. Yet sitting in front of me is a British woman whose life has been threatened in this country solely because she is a Christian. Indeed, so real is the threat that the book she has written about her experiences has had to appear under an assumed name.
The book is called The Imam's Daughter because "Hannah Shah" is just that:
the daughter of an imam in one of the tight-knit Deobandi Muslim Pakistani communities in the north of England . Her father emigrated to this country from rural Pakistan some time in the 1960s and is, apparently, a highly respected local figure...."

11 March 2009 - Rudd government allows overseas aid for abortion
A long-standing principle of the Australian government was to ban the use of overseas aid money for abortion or abortion-related advice. The policy was adopted by the Howard government, at a time when Senator Brian Harradine had the balance of power in the Senate. The regulation was written into the AusAID Family Planning Guidelines .

The Rudd government has now decided to overturn the ban and allow overseas aid money to be used for abortions. The decision was officially made by the Foreign Minister Stephen Smith. Aid groups are said to be supporting the move - but the groups in this article are ABORTION providers in Australia and overseas. Labor MP Bob McMullen says it will help lower maternal death rates and help with the Millennium Goals.

We say they should not be confused - we should be helping advance maternal health and provide maternal health services to stop obstetric fistulas etc. The Australian government has given at least $2 million to the Hospital by the River run by Dr Catherine Hamlin in Ethiopia which deals with fistulas. I'm in the middle of reading the second book about their amazing work - Catherine's Gift

However funding abortions is another matter entirely.
We opposed the overturning of this ban and are disappointed, but not surprised that the Rudd government has taken this step. The matter was presented to the Labor Party room - Kevin Rudd told the media he did not personally support the overturning of the ban but that his party had decided to take this step. He also said he didn't have enough votes in the party to maintain the policy.

Queensland Nationals Senator Ron Boswell and Liberal MP Tony Abbott declared that Mr Rudd had betrayed Christian voters, since he had promoted his Christian values to Christians prior to the election. However Labor's response to a question, prior to the election, about overseas aid being used for abortions was very vague - we're not surprised to see the policy change!

11 March 2009 - Abortion in NSW
NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon used International Women's Day to call on the NSW government to decriminalise (or legalise) abortion in NSW .

Abortion is currently in the Crimes Act in NSW - similar to the previous situation in Victoria before last year's vote to legalise it - but is allowed under legal defence following a ruling by Justice Levine in 1971 which allowed abortion for medical or mental health reasons, including economic and social circumstances.

A spokesman for Attorney-General John Hatzistergos told the SMH: "The current law provides an appropriate balance." Ms Rhiannon said if the government doesn't introduce a bill she will put forward a private member's bill.

4 March 2009 - Darwin and faith...
With the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin this year, there has been a lot of media reporting about Darwin and the theory of evolution. The Anglicans in Melbourne held a service to celebrate Darwin and are to hold a festival and conference - and the Church of England in the UK 'apologised' to Darwin and set up a special website for the purpose!

We maintain that the theory of evolution as proposed by Darwin does not hold - it doesn't explain how life began or how natural selection actually caused the evolution of NEW species.

Now Barney Zwartz, the religion editor for The Age has written a feature article on Darwin and faith, called Darwin's Disciples - in order to show that the two can co-exist peacefully. He features the Anglican service and proposed festival as well as a new book by Anglican bishop Tom Frame.

He dismisses creationists as not accepting science... he refers to "extremists and ideologues in both camps" and says they reject "some claims of science". However, what is the 'science' they reject? Most of the speakers for Creation Ministries are qualified scientists, some with PhDs.
Here is Gary Bates from CMI responding to the first Age article about the service at St Paul's to honour Darwin.

Churches celebrating the ‘Year of Darwin’
Compromising churchians in self-destruct mode
by Gary Bates - CMI, 19 February 2009
“….. Although it is their genuine (but misguided) intent to show that somehow the church is not out of step with modern science, they have completely misunderstood the difference between what most people understand as science and the theory of evolution. CMI has no problem with “science”. In fact, we probably employ more scientists than any other Christian organization, and I can vouch that every one of them believes that gravity (discovered by a creationist!) is a real phenomenon, and that water boils at 100° Celsius (212° F). Such facts are in the realm of operational science , which deals with events that we can observe happening. Evolution and creation are both beliefs about the past that cannot be observed in the present….”

2 March 2009 - Doctrine and belief key battlegrounds in the church
It used to be that to be a committed Christian one believed in the inerrancy of Scripture, the virgin birth, the resurrection of Christ, and so on.
Increasingly we find that many Christian denominations are analysing, and rejecting, much of what has traditionally been seen as essential parts of the faith. Various writers in the 'emergent' church, for instance, are questioning key doctrines such as substitutionary atonement.

The Catholic Church has its own struggle - in particular at present in St Mary's in Brisbane where the priest was stood down recently for rejecting much of Catholic doctrine. Christopher Pearson has an interesting article on the situation in Brisbane...
A church collapsing without foundations
OPINION: Christopher Pearson | February 28, 2009
Article from: The Australian
"TOWARDS the end of pope John Paul II's long reign, the term "cafeteria Catholic" was coined. It was a critical response to the free-ranging way middle-aged people in the First World had taken to picking those parts of the church's teaching and distinctive culture that they found congenial and unapologetically ignoring the rest, much as you might approach a smorgasbord. . ."

25 February 2009 - Sweden to discuss legalising same-sex 'marriage'
The Swedish parliament is currently considering a Bill to legalise “gender neutral marriage”. The Bill was introduced in January 2009 and if passed will become law by May 2009. Six of the seven political parties are said to support the Bill. Three of the four parties in the ruling government Coalition support it - all except the small Christian Democratic Party.

Sweden was the first nation to introduce ‘registered partnerships’ in 1995. Now they are joining the move to change from these ‘partnerships’ to ‘marriage - since both forms of relationship now have the same rights!

25 February 2009 - Reflections on the national memorial service
Yesterday we sent an email on our E-News, reflecting on the format and content of the 'national memorial service' for the Victorian bushfires. We spoke about the 'secular' nature of the service, and the involvement of 'interfaith representatives'.
About the aboriginal 'welcome to country' and the bell ringing. About the statement by Kevin Rudd that there will be an annual minute's silence - we asked... what about other disasters - past and future? Will they all get a special day of remembrance? We don't have a formal day or minute's silence for 'Bali'. We have them for significant war events - but that's different.
We've attached the 'reflection' below....

Today Andrew Bolt has an article in the Herald Sun reflecting on the bushfire memorial service - he asked some of the same questions and some different ones - highlighting the political nature of the event. Click here to read his article Disunity in Death .

24 February 2009 - Homosexuals claim Victorian register a 'success'
A homosexual newspaper is claiming that the Victorian register for same-sex relationships is a 'success' because 48 couples have registered with the Births, Deaths and Marriages office since the scheme began on 1 December 2008.
Of the 48 couples, 17 are female-female, 28 are male-male and 3 are male-female.
An additional 25 couples have applied to register but are in the 28 day waiting period.

However, given that there were 12,708 people in Victoria who said they were in a a same-sex couple relationship at the 2006 census, this means that only 0.7% of those have registered their relationship. Adding in the additional 25 couples gives 1.1% of all same-sex couples.
The question is 'How does one measure 'success'?

In the ACT, which passed 'civil partnership' legislation in May 2008, 52 people (26 couples) have taken out a 'civil partnership'. This is 4.3% of same-sex couples from the 2006 census .

23 February 2009 - Inquiry into Emissions Trading Scheme
Will there be an emissions trading scheme?
In the first article below, the government says they are still planning to push on with a carbon emissions trading scheme. Meanwhile business leaders are said to be pushing for a carbon tax instead of an emissions trading scheme.
In the second article, the Liberals are planning to send the matter to an Inquiry in the Senate...

23 February 2009 - New 'spray on' contraceptive
A new 'spray-on' contraceptive is being developed - the manufacturer says it is to try and overcome the side-effects that result from using the Pill - such as blot clots...

Media report: Spray-on contraceptive could replace pill
The Age, February 23, 2009
"THE contraceptive pill could be a thing of the past if a spray being trialled by a Melbourne company proves successful. The spray, being developed by researchers at Acrux, is applied daily to the forearm to deliver a contraceptive known as Nestorone through the skin. The company says that using the spray form of the drug allows smaller dose sizes, reducing side-effects including water retention and breast tenderness, and in the long term, cardio-vascular problems such as blood clots. . .”

16 February 2009 - Bushfire - churches meet in devastated areas
On Sunday, churches met and local open-air memorial services were held in areas affected by the bushfires.

The pastors of these churches have often lost everything themselves - some have lost loved ones - but they are reaching out to hurting communities.
An article in today's Age newspaper highlights some of the services held.
The article covers a number of services held, but features Mt Cathedral Baptist at Buxton, a church that meets in the local Buxton Hall which wasn't burnt in the fires.
We we have visited and spoken at the church several times. Killian Fitzpatrick and his wife are well known to us.
